Calgary Community Comparison
Sage Hill vs Evanston
Sage Hill and Evanston are two of NW Calgary's largest 2010s-vintage family communities — both opened around 2010, both are fully built out, and both serve the same general buyer demographic of first-time and second-time families looking for affordable NW Calgary new construction (now becoming established resale stock). They share the Symons Valley corridor and most amenity infrastructure.

Vintage and build-out
Both communities opened around 2010-2011 and are essentially fully built out as of 2026 — streets mature, schools operational, retail anchors in place. The two are at the same point in their community lifecycle, which makes this a clean apples-to-apples comparison rather than a vintage-vs-vintage one.
Pricing comparison
Sage Hill detached typically $620K-$1.0M with most product around $700K-$850K. Evanston detached typically $620K-$950K with similar concentration. The two communities trade nearly identically on equivalent product. The deciding factor is usually which specific street, lot, or floor plan fits — not the broader community pricing.
Schools
Sage Hill has Sage Hill School (CBE K-4), and feeders to Robert Thirsk High School (CBE) for senior years. Evanston has Evanston School (CBE K-4) and Kenneth D. Taylor School (CBE), with senior years also routing to Robert Thirsk. Catholic students from both communities attend St. Jean Brebeuf (CCSD K-9) or St. Mary's University Senior High (CCSD). Schools are comparable; Robert Thirsk is the shared high school.
Retail and amenities
Sage Hill has Sage Hill Crossing on Symons Valley Parkway — Walmart, Save-On Foods, Shoppers, banks, restaurants. Evanston has Evanston Towne Centre — Sobeys, Tim Hortons, restaurants, and surrounding services. Both have full daily-needs retail. CrossIron Mills (15 min north) and Beacon Hill (10 min south) supplement both communities.
Commute
Both use Stoney Trail and Symons Valley Parkway / 14 Street NW for downtown commutes. Figure 25-32 minutes peak via Stoney Trail to Sarcee or Crowchild. Foothills Hospital area is 18-22 minutes; University of Calgary 18-22 minutes. The two communities are essentially equidistant on most commute patterns.
Pathways and parks
Both are integrated into the Symons Valley Ravine pathway system, with multiple pond features and interior parks. Tree canopy in both is starting to mature (15+ year trees). The natural-area pathway connection between the two communities makes them feel almost continuous in some sections.
Lot sizes and housing
Both communities have mostly standard 30-40 ft frontage lots typical of post-2010 master-plans. Both have townhome and laned-home product alongside detached. Builder mix is largely the same — Excel, Brookfield, Mattamy, Trico, Sterling — and many home plans appear in both communities. Lot premiums for backing-onto-pathway or pond are similar.
Demographics and community feel
Both communities skew toward 30-45 year old families with school-age children. Sage Hill has a slightly more diverse demographic mix; Evanston has a slightly more affluent mix in its larger-lot sections. Both have active community associations and strong school-aged kid culture. The day-to-day feel is very similar.
Who each community fits best
Realistically, both communities fit the same buyer — NW family, second-time buyer, school-age kids, mid-market budget. The decision is usually driven by which specific home or lot is available when you're shopping rather than community-level differences. Sage Hill leans slightly more retail-anchored; Evanston feels slightly more residential. Pick the home, not the community, on this one.
