Calgary Community Comparison

Wedderburn vs Belmont

Wedderburn is one of Calgary's newest communities, opened in 2023 as part of the south Calgary growth corridor. Belmont opened around 2018 just north of Wedderburn. Both are first-buyer-friendly far-south communities with new construction, lower entry pricing, and ongoing build-out. The pairing is essentially 'brand-new' (Wedderburn) versus 'recently-new' (Belmont), with subtle differences in builder mix and amenities.

Build vintage

Wedderburn started construction in 2023 and is one of the very newest communities in Calgary. Belmont opened in 2018 — five years ahead — and has more established phases plus operational schools and partial retail. Wedderburn's streetscape will not begin to mature until 2028+, while Belmont is starting to look settled in its earliest phases.

Pricing comparison

Wedderburn new-build detached typically $530K-$770K, townhomes from $370K. Belmont detached $550K-$800K, townhomes from $380K. The two communities are essentially equivalent in pricing because both are new-build at first-buyer pricing. The deciding factor isn't price — it's which builder has the floor plan and lot you want.

Schools

Wedderburn currently has no in-community school — students bus to surrounding south Calgary schools including Belmont's school catchment, Yorkville, or further. Belmont has the Belmont K-4 school operational and feeds into Centennial High School (CBE) and Bishop O'Byrne (CCSD). For families needing operational neighbourhood schools, Belmont has the more developed catchment today.

Builder presence and home selection

Both communities draw from the same Calgary production builders — Excel, Brookfield, Mattamy, Trico, Truman, Sterling, Genesis. Wedderburn has more virgin lots available with a wider current floor-plan selection. Belmont's earlier phases are sold out, so today's buyers in Belmont mostly look at later phases or modest resale stock.

Retail and amenities

Wedderburn relies on Belmont, Walden Gate, or Township retail across Macleod for daily errands. Belmont's own commercial core is partial but improving. Both communities are within 10-15 minutes of Shawnessy and Township retail. Neither has a fully operational community-core retail mainstreet yet.

Commute

Wedderburn is slightly further south than Belmont, adding roughly 2-3 minutes to a downtown commute. Both use Macleod Trail S and Stoney Trail SW. Plan for 27-32 minutes peak to downtown from Wedderburn, 25-30 from Belmont. Somerset-Bridlewood LRT (Red Line) is 12-15 minutes north of both.

Outdoor and pathway

Both are integrated into south Calgary pathway plans connecting to Spruce Meadows, Fish Creek Park, and Pine Creek green corridor (Wedderburn is closer to Pine Creek). Wedderburn's natural-area integration is more recent and the trees are saplings; Belmont's earliest phases are starting to develop urban canopy.

Who each community fits best

Wedderburn fits buyers who want the absolute newest construction, latest builder floor plans, and don't mind a 5-10 year wait for full community maturity. Belmont fits buyers who want recently-new construction with operational schools and a slightly more developed neighbourhood feel. Same general buyer profile; different points along the 'new community' timeline.

Frequently Asked Questions

How new is Wedderburn?
Wedderburn started home construction in 2023, making it among the newest active communities in Calgary as of 2026. Build-out is expected to continue well into the 2030s.
Will Wedderburn get its own school?
Future school sites are planned in the master-plan, but build timing depends on enrolment growth and CBE/CCSD funding. For now, students bus to surrounding south Calgary schools.
Are Wedderburn and Belmont neighbouring communities?
Yes — they sit along the same far-south Calgary growth corridor near Macleod Trail S, just minutes apart. Many residents treat them as a single 'south Calgary new-community' market.
Which has more home choice today?
Wedderburn — more virgin lots and active builder showhomes. Belmont's earliest phases are sold out, so today's buyers in Belmont focus on later phases or limited resale.
