Living in Bridgeland

Officially known as Bridgeland-Riverside, this inner-city Calgary neighbourhood traces its roots to Italian and Eastern European settlers who arrived in the early 1900s, and much of that heritage character survives today. Perched on the bluff overlooking the Bow River just across from downtown, the community borders the Calgary Zoo to the east and links to the core via a dedicated pedestrian and bike bridge. A wave of revitalization beginning in the 2010s has layered mid-rise condo buildings, new restaurants, and infill homes onto the original heritage streetscape.

At the heart of the neighbourhood runs 1 Avenue NE, a heritage main street lined with Italian delis, bakeries — Lina's Italian Market chief among them — plus a growing roster of restaurants and cafes. Toward the west, Memorial Park opens up green space with views back toward the downtown skyline. It's this mix of walkable streets, dense dining options, and a short commute that draws so many young professionals and downtown workers to call Bridgeland home.

Families here have access to Riverside School (CBE, K-6) and Sacred Heart School (CCSD), while older students attend Crescent Heights High School (CBE, 10-12) next door in Crescent Heights. Downtown is a quick 5 to 10 minute drive, or roughly a 20-minute walk, and plenty of residents skip the car altogether, biking or walking in along the Bow River pathway.

Few Calgary resale markets offer this much range: condos starting near $400K, walk-up apartments and townhomes in the $500K-$800K band, character homes from $700K to $1.2M, and newer infill detached homes running $1M to $1.8M and beyond. Heritage charm, a busy restaurant scene, and steady redevelopment keep demand — and prices — resilient here, placing Bridgeland among Calgary's stronger inner-city markets. See how it stacks up against Inglewood, Crescent Heights, and Renfrew.

Typical buyers here are young professional couples and suburban downsizers, both drawn by walkable streets that still feel like a neighbourhood rather than a downtown core. Daily life revolves around the 1 Avenue NE strip, where independent restaurants, the Bridgeland Market, and a handful of breweries set the tone. Downtown is just a 4-minute ride away on the C-Train from the Bridgeland-Memorial station, and Tom Campbell's Hill Natural Park on the eastern edge delivers some of the best skyline views anywhere in the city. Each summer, the Bridgeland Block Party brings the community together as its signature event.

Frequently Asked

Bridgeland Questions Answered

What draws young professionals to Bridgeland?
It comes down to speed and walkability: the Bridgeland-Memorial LRT station puts downtown 4 minutes away by C-Train, and the walkable 1 Avenue NE strip packs in 50+ independent restaurants, breweries, and the Bridgeland Market. That blend of transit access, dense dining, and inner-city walkability is exactly what downtown professionals look for.
What kind of homes will I find in Bridgeland?
The housing stock is more diverse than most Calgary communities — think 1900s-1920s character homes still owned by the same families, walk-up condos carved from older apartment buildings, modern townhomes, mid-rise condos along the commercial strip, and larger detached infills going up on former tear-down lots. Lot size depends heavily on which street you're on.
Which schools serve Bridgeland families?
For most Bridgeland addresses, Stanley Jones School (CBE) handles the K-6 catchment, and Crescent Heights High School (CBE) takes over for public grades 10-12. Families seeking a Catholic option look to schools in neighbouring communities. Younger kids in particular benefit from an easy walk to school.
Tell me about the Bridgeland Block Party.
It's Bridgeland's marquee summer gathering, held every year along 1 Avenue NE with restaurants throwing open street patios, live music, and family-friendly activities — one of the biggest neighbourhood events in inner-NE Calgary. Running since the late 2000s, it now pulls in visitors from all across the city.
