Calgary Community Comparison
Belmont vs Walden
Belmont and Walden are SW Calgary's far-southern growth communities — sitting beyond the Macleod Trail / Spruce Meadows corridor and feeding into the new south Calgary commute pattern. Walden opened around 2013 and is essentially built out. Belmont opened around 2018 and is still actively building. The two share a quadrant, similar buyer demographics, and overlapping commute roads — but the build-vintage differential matters for pricing and lifestyle.

Build status
Walden is essentially fully built out as of 2026 — streetscape mature, schools and retail operational, no remaining new construction. Belmont is still in active phase build-out and will continue construction through the late 2020s. For buyers who want ongoing builder selection, Belmont. For buyers who want a finished community, Walden.
Pricing comparison
Walden detached typically $580K-$850K; townhomes from $400K. Belmont new-build detached $550K-$800K with townhomes from $380K. Belmont is roughly 5-10% cheaper on equivalent product because it's a newer community at first-buyer pricing. Walden carries a small maturity premium but is still in the affordable-SW tier.
Schools
Walden has Dr. Freda Miller School (CBE K-4) within community; CCSD students attend nearby St. Sebastian (Auburn Bay area) or in-community Catholic options. Belmont currently has the Belmont K-4 school operational with high schools routing to Centennial High School (CBE) and Bishop O'Byrne High (CCSD) shared with Walden. Both rely on the same SW high school catchment ecosystem.
Retail and grocery
Walden has Walden Gate retail with Sobeys, Shoppers, restaurants, plus access to the Township Shopping Centre across Macleod. Belmont is still developing its commercial core; residents currently use Walden Gate or Township for groceries and daily errands. Both communities are within 8-12 minutes of Shawnessy / Sundance retail corridor.
Commute
Both use Macleod Trail S and Stoney Trail SW for commutes — figure 25-30 minutes peak to downtown via Macleod. The Somerset-Bridlewood LRT terminus is 10-12 minutes north on the Red Line, providing rail connection downtown for both communities. For SW workers (Spruce Meadows area, Heritage Pointe office parks, etc.), both are well-positioned.
Lot sizes and housing
Walden's lots are mostly standard 30-40 ft frontage. Belmont offers a wider mix including some 40+ ft frontages and an estate-style section. Both communities have townhome and laned-home product alongside the detached. Builder mix is similar — Excel, Brookfield, Mattamy, Trico, Sterling — and home plans are largely interchangeable between the two.
Spruce Meadows and outdoor lifestyle
Both are within 5-10 minutes of Spruce Meadows (the international show-jumping facility) and the Spruce Meadows Trail equestrian network. Fish Creek Park is 10 minutes north for both. Both have ponds and integrated pathway systems. Outdoor lifestyle profile is essentially equivalent.
Who each community fits best
Walden fits buyers who want a complete, finished SW community with operational schools, retail, and trees beginning to mature. Belmont fits first-time buyers and new-construction buyers who want lower entry pricing and don't mind ongoing build-out for the next 5-7 years. Same buyer demographic; different stage of community life.
