From Staffa to the Huron shore
The Ausable River winds over 240 km through southwestern Ontario before emptying into Lake Huron at Port Franks. Its dramatic 180-degree turn gave Grand Bend its name, and an 1875 drainage project — known locally as “The Cut” — reshaped its course.
Today the spring-fed Old Ausable Channel threads through Pinery Provincial Park and Grand Bend — a calm 14 km paddling and fishing waterway separated from the main river over a century ago.

This is one of Ontario's most popular summer corridors: Grand Bend's Lake Huron beach, the oak-savanna dunes of the Pinery, and channel-front cottages along the Old Ausable.
