Gateway to the Thousand Islands
Gananoque is a town of about 5,400 on the St. Lawrence River at the mouth of the Gananoque River, billed as the "Gateway to the Thousand Islands" — the maze of islands, channels and castles strung along the river. The name itself is said to mean "water rising over rocks."
It's about 15 minutes from the Thousand Islands Bridge to the U.S., two hours from Ottawa and three from the GTA, and sits within two UNESCO-recognized areas: the Rideau Canal and the Frontenac Arch Biosphere.
