The terraced shore
Terrace Bay takes its name from the staircase of lake terraces the glaciers left behind some 20,000 years ago — and the town still rises in tiers above Lake Superior's north shore.
Founded in the 1940s as a pulp-and-paper town, it's home to roughly 1,500 people today.
On the water
Beach, falls and gorge
Terrace Bay Beach is the heart of it: a sandy stretch on Lake Superior with a boardwalk, a pavilion at the mouth of the Aguasabon River, and a set of Parks Canada red chairs at the end of the trail. Just up the river, Aguasabon Falls drops about 100 feet into an ancient granodiorite gorge.
