Living in Bracebridge
Bracebridge is the district town of Muskoka — not the most famous (that's Huntsville or Gravenhurst), not the most tourist-driven (that's Port Carling), but the most functional: the seat of the District Municipality of Muskoka, with the courthouse, the hospital (South Muskoka Memorial Hospital), and the service infrastructure that makes the district work. High Falls, where the Muskoka River drops 11 metres through a narrow gorge right at the edge of downtown, is one of Ontario's most dramatic urban waterfalls — you can walk to it in ten minutes from the main street. A hydroelectric generating station at the falls (one of Ontario's earliest, built 1894) still operates, feeding the regional grid with the same water drop that amazed the first settlers.
Lake Muskoka, Muskoka River, and the surrounding lake district give Bracebridge a recreational surround that most Ontario towns would trade their entire heritage for. The town itself — unlike the pure resort communities of Port Carling or Bala — has a working retail and service core that operates year-round rather than just in cottage season. This makes it livable in a way that pure cottage country communities aren't: there is a grocery store, a hospital, a school system, and a library that function in January. The Muskoka Arts and Crafts Centre, the Bracebridge Riverwalk, and the Santa's Village amusement park (open summers) give the town amenities beyond service provision. Real estate ranges from town-centre residential to the waterfront properties on Lake Muskoka that command Muskoka premiums.
