Pinawa was designed before it was built — which is unusual enough for a Manitoba community — by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited in the early 1960s. AECL needed a community for scientists and technical staff at the Whiteshell Nuclear Research Establishment, and they decided to do it properly: curvilinear streets following the Shield terrain, abundant park space, a golf course, and community facilities that reflected the professional character of the intended residents. The result is a town that looks and feels different from every other community in Manitoba, with a planned intelligence in its layout that shows up in the street network, the park connectivity, and the general sense that someone thought this through.
Pinawa Dam Provincial Park preserves the ruins of Manitoba's first hydroelectric dam — a concrete and stone structure built 1906–1910, decommissioned in 1951, and now standing magnificently in a Shield setting of granite outcrops and boreal forest. The Pinawa Channel, the historic water diversion dug to feed the dam, is now an exceptional flat-water kayaking corridor through scenery that wouldn't look out of place in northern Ontario. It's one of the most visually striking provincial parks in Manitoba, and it's right at Pinawa's doorstep.
