Neepawa, Manitoba
Margaret Laurence grew up here, turned it into Manawaka, and put the prairie interior on the Canadian literary map — the town that inspired The Stone Angel still has its gorgeous heritage brick downtown, its lilies, and its quiet, grounded sense of self.

Neepawa means "land of plenty" in Ojibwe, and the name has earned its keep across 150 years of prairie agriculture. The community sits on the Yellowhead corridor in central Manitoba, its Mountain Avenue heritage streetscape — Victorian and Edwardian brick fronts in an unbroken, well-maintained row — representing one of the most handsome small-town main streets in rural Manitoba. Walking the downtown gives a sense of what prosperity looked like when the grain economy was young and the builders spared no effort.
Margaret Laurence was born here in 1926 and grew up in a house on McTavish Street that is now a National Historic Site and writers' retreat. She renamed the town Manawaka in her fiction and used it as the setting for five novels that became cornerstones of Canadian literature — including The Stone Angel, in which Hagar Shipley's memories of Manawaka's cemetery, characters, and light constitute some of the most precise and honest writing about prairie life ever produced. Literary pilgrims from across the country visit Laurence's home; Neepawa wears the connection with genuine, non-commercial pride.
The Manitoba Lily Festival each July draws flower enthusiasts to gardens throughout the community. HyLife's pork processing operation provides a significant employment anchor. The healthcare centre, K–12 schools, and Yellowhead Highway access give Neepawa a complete small-city infrastructure at a scale where the pace of life is still recognizably human. Property prices reflect a community 175km from Winnipeg — accessible by highway but not a commuter town.
