Boissevain sits at the foot of Turtle Mountain, where the flat southwestern Manitoba prairie suddenly finds the ambition to rise into a forested plateau. The upland ecosystem of Turtle Mountain Provincial Park — uncommon this far into the grassland zone — makes the area ecologically distinctive and gives Boissevain a natural setting that most prairie towns simply don't have access to. Thirty kilometres south, the International Peace Garden commemorates the open border between Canada and the United States with formal gardens, peace towers, and a carillon on the 49th parallel. It's the kind of landmark that appears on maps in a way that makes people say "I didn't know that was there" — and then they go, and they understand why the people of Boissevain never stopped being quietly proud of their geography.
