Selkirk sits on the Red River 25km north of Winnipeg — close enough to make the commute manageable, far enough to have its own distinct identity. It's a working city with steel mills and heritage institutions in the same postal code, where anglers pull trophy-sized channel catfish from the silty Red River at the same spot where Hudson's Bay Company traders once loaded fur packs onto York boats. The combination is distinctly, unapologetically Selkirk.
EVRAZ's steel rolling mill is a visible anchor of the local economy — one of the few remaining integrated steel operations in western Canada, processing recycled scrap into rebar and merchant bar for the prairie construction industry. Eight kilometres south, Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site operates in striking contrast: the only intact stone fur trade fort in Canada, built between 1830 and 1848, where costumed interpreters walk the same limestone corridors where treaty negotiations and fur trade commerce once defined the region's future. Treaty 1, the first numbered treaty between the Crown and First Nations, was signed at Lower Fort Garry in 1871.
The catfish culture is genuine. Ralph — a fibreglass channel catfish the size of a small car — greets visitors at Marine Park, where the Red River Trail runs along the bank. St. Andrew's Lock and Dam, a National Historic Site built 1900–1910 just downstream, was once the engine that made steamboat navigation to Lake Winnipeg possible. Today cyclists and families use the trails; the history just happens to be built right into the scenery.
